Proposal for a White House Council on Boys to Men

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Important update: I’ve received new information about the proposal from Dr Farrell, that clarifies how the proposal came about, and the status of the documents progress.

The request of President Obama to create a White House Council on Boys to Men was originally inspired in 2009 by a discussion between Dr. Warren Farrell and White House Boards and Commissions Director Joanna Martin. Shortly after, Dr. Farrell created a multi-partisan Commission of 30 prominent authors, educators, researchers and practitioners to accomplish three goals: investigate the status of boys and their journey into manhood; identify both surface and underlying problems confronting boys and men; create a blueprint toward solutions. This proposal is the result.

As to the status of the document’s progress, the proposal is in the office of the Chief of Staff to the President, William Daley, who will be making a decision to either move forward with it, delay it, or reject it–or make no decision–in the next few weeks.

The Commission in its entirety drafted the proposal, not only dr. Farrell.

Here’s the original blog post, which is no longer accurate:

The White House is finally gearing up to create the equivalent of the White House Council on Women and Girls. Dr. Warren Farrell, with the assistance of 28 prominent authors, educators, researchers and practitioners, has drafted the Proposal for a White House Council on Boys to Men.

Hopefully this can be an important building block for putting men’s issues on the political agenda in the US, and around the world.

I met dr Farrell last summer, and I believe he is just the right person for this kind of work, so it’s great to see that President Obama trusted him with the task of drafting this very important document.
